The god worshiped here is the,"LORD SHIVA".The name of the temple is the Ramanatha swamy temple.Among all the temples in the world, the world's longest corridors is found in this amazing temple in Rameshwaram. The temple got it's name because,Lord Rama worshiped Lord Shiva at this place.

Temple risen history:

We all may have read the world's best epic"Ramayana".In that epic, when Rama was out from Sita, the demon named Ravana covered and kidnapped her to his homeland,"Srilanka".Then Rama with his younger brother Lakshmana and his servant Lord Hanuman planned to rescue Sita from Ravana and they reached the border of Indian peninsula at Rameshwram. That spot is considered as the last departure of India and Rama built successfully a bridge named "PAMBAN BRIDGE" with the help of Hanuman. Then Rama rose the war against Ravana, him and finally he killed the Demon(Ravana) and rescued Goddess Sita. According to Rama,he has killed the Brahmin. To seek forgiveness and to expiate the, "dosha of killing a brahmin",  Rama needed to worship Lord Shiva. But unfortunately there was no statue of Linga. Then he sent Hauman to bring the linga. As Hanuman delayed to bring it and to the advice of the elders,Sita was asked to construct the Linga with the clay. But in return from Kailash with the Linga called "Vishwalinga",Hanuman was disappointed on seeing the Linga of Sita. Then Rama promised Hanuma that his Linga will be worshiped by the world. Thus the temple risen and won the history of architecture and sculpture.

Constructions:

This temple occupies a space of about 15 acres. The length of the outer wall at East to West is about 865 feet and at North to South is about 657 feet. The West Gopuram is of 78 feet  high and has 5 tiers. And the East Gopuram is of 126 feet high and has 9 tiers. The Temple Gopurams are coated with Alkaline resistant paint to prevent from saline and humid air.The Great Nandhi statue is about 17 feet tall with a width of 12 feet and is made up of bricks, lime stones and sea shells.
The renovation and reconstruction process of the Ramanathaswamy temple was started in 1414 CE by Udaiyaan Sethupathi and Pararajasekara Aryasakravarthy, a Srilankan (Tamil) King. The granite stones were used to obtain from a Srilankan mountain Thirkonamalai and other various mountains and were transported to Rameshwaram via the water route.
Between 1897 and 1904, the ALAR family of Devakottai completed the imposing eastern tower of nine tiers 126 feet in height from Thiruppani funds. Between 1907 and 1925 they renovated the Sanctum Sanctorum and the prakaram(inner most corridor) by replacing the lime stones by black granite with adequate provision for light and ventilation and also arranged for the performance of Ashtabandana Kumbabishekam in 1925; then on 22-2-1947 and the third Ashtabandana Maha Kumbabishegam was performed on 5-2-1975.
During the construction of first corridor, it was decided to renovate the second corridor. The lime stone structure in Second corridor was dismantled and started granited stone work. But only compound wall in west side and one portion in north side of western wing in south gate was renovate. After that no Renovation work as done.
Therefore, it was proposed to complete the Renovation work of Second Corridor by collecting Funds from the public. Between 1961 to 1985, the Renovation work of Second Corridor was taken up and completed the western side of Second Corridor and a portion in North and South side, from the Temple Renovation Fund. Now it has been proposed to complete the Renovation of Second Corridor which has been unfinished and the Renovation work is started now.
The Sethupathy mandapam in front of the Temple’s Raja Gopuram9main Tower) was constructed by Ramanatha Sethupathy, a descendant of Ramnad Raja dynasty, with his own donation of Rs. 2,75,000 /-. This construction was started on 19-11-69 and completed on 11-2-74.
It is also most essential to construct the North and South Gopurams. Shri Jagadguru Sringeri Peedathipathy and Shri jagadguru Kanchi Kamakoti Peedathipathy have given their kind blessings for the constructions of the North and South Gopurams of the Temple.

Longest Corridor and pillars:

In several ways, the Ramanatha Swamy temple in Rameswaram is like any other temple in south India - ornate, huge and awe-inducing. But what makes this temple particularly interesting is its very, very long corridors. It is considered as the longest corridors in the world.
The corridor extends from East to West at a distance of  690 feet and from North to South at a distance of  435 feet in the outer wing. And at the inner wing it extends 649 feet distance from East to West and 395 feet distance from North to South. It has the height of 22 feet and 7(1/2)inches.

Unlike all the temples the amazing wonder lying here is that all the pillars at the front view merges at a single point .Even now it is a hard task to find the reason behind the fact and also it is mostly impossible to built another one like this.Every pillar has a height of about 30 feet and most designs carved on them. Those pillars are coated with the Snow-cem (cement) to prevent them from corrosion. And also the other wonder is it's number.Yeah! It has about 1212 pillars in count which is carved mostly.

Other unknown facts:

The British Government released a stamp with the picture of the Rameshwaram Temple in the year 1935.The temple has 22 theerthams (wells) where devotees bath before paying their respects to the presiding deity and is also home to Spatika lingam that is believed to be one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of the world. The Linga present in Ramanatha Swamy temple is as old as Rama. That means it is believed that it has been presented before the birth of Lord Rama.
