METRO RAILS IN PUMP CITY COIMBATORE

Coimbatore city:
    Coimbatore was part of Kongu Nadu during the Sangam period between c.1st and the 4th centuries CE and was ruled by the Cheras as it served as the eastern entrance to the Palakkad Gap, the principal trade route between the west coast and Tamil Nadu.Coimbatore,also known as Kovai is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu located on the banks of the Noyyal River surrounded by the Western Ghats.It is the second largest city in the state after Chennai and 16th largest urban agglomeration in India.It is the largest city in the Kongunadu region.
    In 1804, Coimbatore was established as the capital of the newly formed Coimbatore district and in 1866 it was accorded municipality status with Robert Stanes as its Chairman.The city experienced a textile boom in the early 19th century due to the decline of the cotton industry in Mumbai.Post independence,Coimbatore has seen rapid growth due to industrialization.Coimbatore was ranked the best emerging city in India by India Today in the 2014 annual Indian city survey.The city was ranked fourth among Indian cities in investment climate by Confederation of Indian Industry and 17th among the top global outsourcing cities by Tholons.





Manchester of South India:
     The city is also known for its handloom products.There are a number of technical institutions.For religious people important a festival is Arudhra Dharshan at Perur.For Industrial people,annual SIGNPOST Industrial FAIR is an important Fair.It is often referred to as the "Manchester of South India" due to its cotton production and textile industries.Coimbatore is also referred to as the "Pump City" and it supplies nearly half of India's requirements of motors and pumps.The city is one of the largest exporters of jewellery, wet grinders, poultry and auto components with "Coimbatore Wet Grinder" and "Kovai Cora Cotton" recognised as Geographical Indications by the Government of India.

Railways and metro:
    Train service in Coimbatore started in 1861, upon the construction of the Podanur to Madras line connecting Kerala and the west coast with the rest of India.Coimbatore lies on the Coimbatore to Shoranur Broad gauge railway line and the city falls under the Salem Division of the Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways.The major railway station is the Coimbatore Junction which is the second-largest income generating station in the Southern Railway zone after Chennai Central and is among the top hundred booking stations of Indian Railways.
    In 2012, Coimbatore Municipal Corporation proposed three rail routes and has remained a non started till date.In 2017 Tamil Nadu government Announced that feasibility study for coimbatore metro will be conducted by CMRL and the fund will be provided by German based KFW company.




Introducing metro rail system:
    Finally the Manchester of Southern India,got its metro railway project.The CM of Tamil Nadu announced that metro rail projects will be implemented and added that it would be carried out with the permission of Central Government after Germany' funds.There should be 20 stations planned for his project.The expenses of this project may be around Rs.12,000 crores.The metro man E.Sreedharan said that the city required medium category metro.It will  cater to 42,000-45,000.The operating metro rail system in Chennai will plan the project design for Coimbatore.
    However, the CM does not mentioned the project expenses and tie frame.So the industrialists asked for the the time frame and estimated cost should be announced by the Government.The city remains happy now about the announcement which is seeking mass rapid transit system for a long period of time. Sreedharan said that he is not involving in this project because he is on Kochi's metro rail project.He added that it must take about 8 months to complete a project design and the city was already 5 years behind its schedule,hence the project implementation will finished asa soon as possible.
